Coatimundi

Information

The Coatimundi, also known as the Coati, is a medium-sized tree-climbing mammal found in South America, Central America, and the southwestern United States. It is related to the raccoon and has a long snout, an elongated body, and a bushy, striped tail with dark rings. Female coatis and their young eat, sleep, and travel in groups of about 30 individuals. At the age of 2, male coatis leave the group to live alone. While sleeping, a coati tucks its nose into its belly.

Eating Habits

Coatimundis are omnivores, requiring a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, meat, and insects. They eat insects, fruits, rodents, lizards, and small snakes. Avoid toxic foods such as chocolate, avocado, caffeine, and alcohol. Always ensure they have access to fresh water.

Habitat

Coatimundis are highly adaptable to various habitats. They are found in tropical areas and open forests, as well as the slopes of the Andes mountains at elevations over 8,200 feet. They live in rocky ravines and dens in caves, crevices, hollow trees, and sometimes buildings. Coatimundis can inhabit nearly any type of terrain, from coastal mangrove forests to dense tropical jungles, lowland savannas, and even deserts.
