Raccoons are nocturnal mammals characterised by their bushy, ringed tails. The most common and well-known species is the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor), which inhabits areas ranging from northern Canada and much of the United States to South America. They are easily identified by the black “mask” around their eyes and their ringed tails, which feature 5 to 10 black bands. Raccoons have five fingers, much like humans, and use their dexterous hands to gather food, open shells, doors, or garbage bins. They often place food in water before eating it, as water enhances the sensitivity of their highly tactile sense of touch.

Raccoons are omnivores. Their diet includes nuts, berries, fruits, corn, grains, small mammals such as mice and rabbits, bird eggs and nestlings, fish, shellfish, crayfish, reptiles, and amphibians. They frequently hunt along water edges to find their prey.
Habitat
Raccoons prefer wooded areas near rivers, ponds, and swamps but are highly adaptable and can thrive in agricultural regions and near human development. They create their dens in tree cavities, hollow logs or abandoned burrows, rock crevices, brush piles, chimneys, attics, sheds, and other structures.
