Bat-Eared Fox

Maklumat

The Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis) is a unique canid species found in the savannas and grasslands of Africa. It is known for its large ears, which resemble those of a bat. This fox has 48 teeth, more than most other mammal species, and it uses nine different calls to communicate with one another. They also use their tails and ears as a means of communication. Additionally, this fox obtains moisture from its food in addition to drinking water.

Tabiat Pemakanan

The main diet of the Bat-eared Fox consists of insects, particularly termites. These foxes use their acute sense of hearing to locate termites and then dig into termite mounds or burrow into other ground-dwelling invertebrates. In addition to termites, they also consume dung beetles, grasshoppers, scorpions, spiders, millipedes, mice, lizards, fruits, and eggs.

Habitat

The Bat-eared Fox primarily lives in arid grasslands, savannas, and Acacia forests. They are adapted to arid or semi-arid environments and prefer to stay in areas with short grasses. When threatened, the fox will retreat into tall grasses for safety. They tend to hunt in short grasslands and low shrub habitats but will occasionally enter areas with tall grasses and thick shrubs to hide when threatened.
